Parasite Control & Prevention

A year-round plan that includes a combination of preventives to protect against parasites.

Pets should have a year round parasite prevention plan to protect them against a range of harmful pests that transmit diseases, trigger infections or cause serious health complications. Our veterinary team can prescribe a parasite preventive for your pet to shield them against potential harm. To book an appointment, please contact us at 416-245-8805.

Do ticks and fleas pose any health risks to my pet?

Ticks don't jump, fly, or drop from trees onto your pet's head and back. They quest, which means they sit on tall grass or branches and wait for a host to come by so they can crawl onto them. On their normal hosts, they prefer to blood feed around the head, neck, and ears as well as where the skin is thinner/more difficult to groom. Some types of ticks that pose a risk to your pet include American Dog Tick, Lone Star Tick, Brown Dog Tick and Western Black Legged Tick. All of these ticks carry bacteria that could make your pet sick. For example, the Western Black Legged Tick transmits anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease to dogs, cats and humans. These ticks are extremely small and can be hard to find when examining your pets for ticks. Fleas can carry tapeworm eggs and cause allergic reactions. To prevent tapeworms in your pet and excessive itching as well as allergic reactions from flea saliva, preventives are essential.

Do preventives only provide protection against external parasites?

Parasite preventives provide your pet with broad spectrum protection against external and internal parasites. Based on your pet's risk factors or lifestyle, including their likelihood to roam outside your home or interact with wild animals, we'll prescribe a preventive that best supports their needs. A few types of preventives, including injections, oral and topical medications could be combined to provide protection against some parasites like:

  • Tapeworms
  • Whipworms
  • Roundworms
  • Hookworms
  • Fleas and ticks
  • Heartworms
