Pocket Pet Services

Providing care for guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, and gerbils

Pocket pets require specialized care, just like any other patients we serve. Routine veterinary visits help ensure your pocket pet stays happy and healthy throughout their life. Whether you need recommendations about their specialized diet or assistance with routine care, our veterinary team is here to support you every step of the way.

Leading your pocket pet’s care is Dr. Lauren Monaco, DVM, our Medical Director and Veterinarian. Dr. Monaco earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University and completed her clinical training at Purdue University. With additional academic achievements, including a Master’s in Integrative Biology from Wilfrid Laurier University and hands-on experience working with wildlife at the Toronto Wildlife Centre, Dr. Monaco brings deep expertise and compassion to the care of small mammals.

Our Pocket Pet Services

  • Nail Trims: Overgrown nails can cause discomfort or even injury to small mammals. Our team offers quick, gentle nail trimming services.
  • Wellness Exams & Vaccinations: Just like dogs and cats, pocket pets need regular check-ups to detect health problems early. We offer thorough wellness exams and can advise you on the best preventive care strategies.
  • Medical Consultations: If your small mammal is acting differently—such as being more lethargic or refusing food—our veterinary team will provide a full consultation to identify the issue and suggest treatment. Please note that while we offer extensive medical consultations, we do not perform surgeries on pocket pets.
  • Radiographs & Bloodwork: X-rays and blood tests can uncover hidden conditions, from respiratory infections to tumors, ensuring your pet gets the right treatment.
  • Eye Care: Conditions like cataracts or infections can affect your pocket pet’s quality of life. We provide specialized care to maintain their eye health.
  • Palliative Care & Euthanasia: For aging or critically ill pocket pets, we offer palliative care to manage pain and ensure comfort, as well as humane euthanasia services when necessary.
  • Dermatology & Anti-parasitic Treatments: Mites, lice, and fleas can cause significant discomfort for pocket pets. We offer tailored treatments to eliminate parasites and soothe skin conditions.
  • Gastrointestinal Disease Treatment: Small mammals can be prone to digestive issues, especially guinea pigs and rabbits. We offer expert treatment to ensure their digestive health stays on track.
  • Triage: We provide immediate care for emergencies to stabilize your pet and improve their chances of recovery.

How Do I Care for Pocket Pets?

Pocket pets require specific care to ensure they stay healthy and happy. Here are some essential tips to provide proper care for them:

  • Provide a suitable habitat: Your pocket pet needs a habitat that is appropriate for their size and species. The habitat should be clean, safe, and provide enough space to move around and play.
  • Feed a balanced diet: Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best type of food for your pet. It's crucial to ensure that your pet has access to fresh water at all times.
  • Provide exercise and stimulation: Your pocket pet requires mental and physical stimulation to stay healthy. Provide opportunities for play and exercise, such as running wheels or toys.
  • Monitor for signs of illness: Look out for any changes in behavior, loss of appetite, or lethargy. These could be signs of illness, and you should consult with your veterinarian if you notice anything unusual.
  • Practice good hygiene: Keep your pet's habitat clean and provide appropriate bedding materials to keep them comfortable and healthy.
  • Schedule regular veterinary checkups: Routine checkups with a veterinarian can help detect any health issues early and ensure your pocket pet stays in the best condition.
